LED UV Curing Systems

Phoseon FIREFLY and STARFIRE UV LED Curing Arrays

The Phoseon FIREFLY System is a desktop instrument that generates a flood of high intensity, single peak wavelength of UV light for the curing of links, coatings and adhesives at up to 4000mw/cm2 between 380 and 410nm

The light sources are arrays of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) mounted using a unique, method, to create a high yet linear spread intensity of irradiation.

These LED UV Curing products have been developed primarily to demonstrate the features and benefits of generating UV from LEDs rather than from conventional bulb technology for curing applications.

The energy content of UV light has been successfully used for more than 30 years for the photopolymerisation of surface coatings. More recently UV is being used in broader applications for the rapid curing of adhesives, paints and inks. Photopolymer chemistry offers an attractive alternative to solvent based systems with the environmental issues of power hungry furnaces and the removal of volatile organic compounds.

The STARFIRE LED arrays are built into a remote housing connected to the main instrument via an umbilical flexible hosting, supplying the necessary power, cooling and temperature sensing. This enables the array to be positioned close to the items being cured.

Arrays are air or water cooled, in which case the main instrument houses the water cooling heat exchanger and pump, the necessary power supplies and a microprocessor board with display for the control of the LED intensity and switch-on times.

Applications

These versatile instruments provide a precision method of initiating a photo-chemical reaction, not possible with conventional bulb technology. The LEDs can be switched on instantaneously with no warm up required.

The light source can be positioned close up to the substrate without the danger of heat damage as no I.R. is generated from the LEDs. A uniform intensity of irradiation is produced over he full area of the array which ensures an even cure across this area.

The instrument can be programmed for either a single power level or a variable cure profile.

Short pulses can be produced to simulate substrates moving under conveyors so that in-line processes utilizing UV LED curing can be simulated.
